Indian companies in Australian carbon emission boom
Adani & GVK’s combined carbon emission from its Australian coal
mines would exceed 300mil tonnes annually says Greenpeace report
Ahmadabad/Hyderabad, September 19, 2012: A report released by Greenpeace has estimated the total amount of carbon emission from the Australian coal mines proposed for a new mining region to about 700mtpa. Adani and GVK are two Indian companies who plan to set-up mega coal mines in Australia. The report ‘Cooking the Climate and Wrecking the Reef’ estimates the impact of carbon emission on global climate as well as the Australian Great Barrier Reef. (1)
Australia has begun the process of approving up to nine new mega mines in the new mining region, the Galilee Basin, five of which would be bigger than any existing coal mine in Australia. If these mines proceed, when they reach maximum production, the emissions from burning the coal would be over 700mtpa of carbon dioxide (CO2). In other words, if the Galilee Basin was a country, it would be the seventh biggest emitter of carbon dioxide pollution from fossil fuel burning in the world.
According to Vinuta Gopal, Greenpeace Campaigner, “Whether the Galilee coal resource is exploited will shape the future of our children and our grandchildren. Adani and GVK have not factored into their plans the massive impacts on global warming and the impacts on the Great Barrier Reef, they continue to claim that the investment is safe, while there are many questions as yet that hang fire”.
Adani’s Carmichael mine will produce up to 60mtpa of coal which will create 128mtpa of carbon emission. Whereas GVK’s three proposed mines will produce a total of 70mtpa of coal, which when burnt, will release about 174mtpa of CO2. Greenpeace report estimates the total carbon emissions of all coal mine projects in Galilee basin to the tune of 700mtpa, which is about 140mtpa more than the total annual carbon emission of Australia.
Increase in coal production and exports would result in increase in shipping traffic on the Great Barrier Reef. This will increase the chances of damage caused to the world heritage values of the Great Barrier Reef. “UNESCO’s world heritage committee has warned the Australian government that failure to take protective measures would result in the Great Barrier Reef being put in World Heritage “in danger” list. Investing in this project would not only destroy the reef but also cause an immense negative impact on global climate” added Ms. Gopal. (2)
Early last month, environmental groups such as Sierra club along with Greenpeace had written a letter to the Chairman of US Ex-Im Bank, Fred Hochberg, after GVK had publicly mentioned it to be one of the financers. Mr. James Mahoney, Vice President - Engineering and Environment, replied via a letter stating "we have yet to receive a formal application for financing relating to this project, and we have no information on its potential environmental effects. Only after an application is received will it undergo extensive environmental, legal and commercial due review before it is ever presented to Ex-Im Bank's Board of Directors for action”. (3)
Greenpeace is calling for a halt to the massive proposed expansion of coal mining and export infrastructure across Queensland.

Thanks for sharing this informative post. Software developers understand that creating software requires paying close attention to each and every stage of the process of developing the software. Both design and usability should be kept in mind. Both design and usability are important. Free software, in contrast with software that is paid, may come with problems that may lead to less user satisfaction. Android is very popular and leading mobile development platform stands with large number of mobile applications. Android also offer flexibility to developer to develop custom android application according to users need.
software development Australia is the best platform if you are looking a very pocket friendlly development company.
