SSINA Releases Market Data FOR November 2011
(Washington, D.C., February 14, 2012) – The Specialty Steel Industry of North America (“SSINA”) has released statistical data on imports, U.S. consumption, and import penetration for YTD November 2011. The data represents U.S. consumption, imports, and import penetration for November 2011 compared to the same 2010 eleven month period.
The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:
Ø Stainless steel sheet/strip: Imports in YTD November 2011 were 369,154 tons, a 5.4% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption was 1,449,889 tons, a 26.5% increase; eleven month import penetration was 25.5%, a 5.0 percentage point decrease from 2010.
Ø Stainless steel bar: Imports in YTD November 2011 were 130,473 tons, a 34.3% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption was 237,816 tons, a 20.1% increase; eleven month import penetration was 54.9%, a 5.8 percentage point increase from 2010.
Ø Stainless steel rod: Imports in YTD November 2011 were 25,452 tons, a 17.1% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption was 66,799 tons, a 11.6% increase; eleven month import penetration was 38.1%, a 1.8 percentage point increase from 2010.
Ø Stainless steel wire: Imports in YTD November 2011 were 43,234 tons, a 6.2% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption was 56,500 tons, a 5.0% increase; eleven month import penetration was 76.5%, a 0.9 percentage point increase from 2010.
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in YTD November 2011 were 728,648 tons, a 21.8% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption was 2,146,576 tons, a 26.3% increase; eleven month import penetration was 33.9%, a 1.3 percentage point decrease from 2010.
Ø Alloy tool steel: Imports in YTD November 2011 were 101,770 tons, a 32.3% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Ø Electrical steel: Imports in YTD November 2011 were 106,904 tons, a 21.6% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption was 212,380 tons, a 19.9% increase from YTD November 2010; eleven month import penetration was 50.3%, a 0.7 percentage point increase from 2010.
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD November 2011 were 937,322 tons, a 22.8% increase compared to YTD November 2010; U.S. consumption was 2,413,138 tons, a 25.4% increase; eleven month import penetration was 38.8%, a 0.8 percentage point decrease from 2010.
