Women’s Leadership Summit
  
A Women’s Leadership Summit was organised by the Ministry of Women and Child Development on 6th March, 2010 in New Delhi, as part of the celebrations for the International Women’s Day. The Summit was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The objective of the Summit was to showcase empowered women, those who had excelled in different fields.

The central theme of the Summit was ‘Inclusive Growth and Empowering Women of Rural India’. There were two Technical Sessions held in which the women achievers spoke on challenges and opportunities for women in diverse fields such as corporate sector, financial services, agriculture, science, media, Panchayati raj, sports, culture, education and law.

The Summit was attended by eminent women, members of the Self-Help Groups and Civil Society Organisations, students, State and Central Government officials, amongst others.

The deliberations provided the young women and men participants with valuable insights into various facets of empowerment – the challenges, the issues of concern and the way forward.

A national mission for empowerment of women (2010-15) was launched on International Women’s Day – 8th March this year with a view to empowering women socially, economically and educationally. The NMEW shall have National Mission Authority (NMA) under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister and a similar mission under the chairpersonship of the Chief Ministers of respective States.

This information was given by Smt. Krishna Tirath, Minister of State for Women and Child Development in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.
