The Government has drawn a detailed action plan for renovation of ports and prepared a roadmap for development of shipping in the country.
With the objective to upgrade and modernize port infrastructure in India and development of shipping, a National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP) has been formulated by the Ministry of Shipping. Under this programme, specific projects have been identified to be taken up for implementation up to 2011-12 with an overall investment of Rs.1,00,339 crores.
There is no ongoing project in shipping sector in which there is private participation.
In order to create level playing field for the Indian Shipping Companies with their global counter parts, the Government has introduced Tonnage Tax Regime in India since the year 2004 by which the tax out go for Indian Shipping Companies has been brought in line with International Standard.
This information was given in a statement laid in reply to a question in Lok Sabha today by the Union Minister of Shipping, Shri G. K. Vasan.
