Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel & Power in India (Base: 2004-05 = 100)Review for the week ended 2nd October, 2010 (10 Asvina, 1932 Saka)



The WPI [with base year 2004-05] for the week ended 2nd October, 2010 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel & Power’ is given below:




PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)



The index for this major group rose by 0.7 percent to 182.2 (Provisional) from 181.0 (Provisional) for the previous week.



The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 18.54 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 02/10/2010 (over 03/10/2009) as compared to 18.53 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 25/09/2010).



The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-



The index for ‘Food Articles’ group rose by 0.9 percent to 181.3 (Provisional) from 179.7 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of fruits & vegetables (5%), gram and bajra (2% each) and masur, urad, barley and moong (1% each). However, the prices of fish-marine (4%) and arhar and condiments & spices (1% each) declined.



The index for ‘Non-Food Articles’ group declined by 0.1 percent to 160.9 (Provisional) from 161.0 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of castor seed (4%), groundnut seed and cotton seed (2% each) and gaur seed and linseed (1% each). However, the prices of niger seed and mesta (4% each), raw rubber and fodder (2% each) and rape & mustard seed (1%) moved up.



The index for ‘Minerals’ group rose by 0.5 percent to 249.9 (Provisional) from 248.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of steatite (8%), chromite (7%) and copper ore (6%). However, the prices of gypsum (22%), barytes (7%) and zinc concentrate (6%) declined.



FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)



The index for this major group rose by 0.1 percent to 147.7 (Provisional) from 147.6 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of aviation turbine fuel (2%) and light diesel oil (1%). However, the prices of bitumen (2%) declined.



The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 11.14 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 02/10/2010 (over 03/10/2009) as compared to 10.73 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 25/09/2010).
