Index Numbers of Wholesale Prices in India (Base: 2004-05=100)Review for the month of September, 2010
The official Wholesale Price Index for 'All Commodities' (Base: 2004-05=100) for the month of September, 2010 rose by 0.6 percent to 141.1 (Provisional) from 140.3(Provisional) for the previous month.
INFLATION
The annual rate of inflation, based on monthly WPI, stood at 8.62% (Provisional) for the month of September, 2010 (over September, 2009) as compared to 8.51 % (Provisional) for the previous month. Build up inflation in the financial year so far was 3.90% compared to a build up of 5.44% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-
PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 20.12%)
The index for this major group rose by 1.5 percent to 179.7 (Provisional) from 177.0 (Provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-
The index for 'Food Articles' group rose by 1.6 percent to 179.0 (Provisional) from 176.2 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of fish-inland (18%), fruits & vegetables and condiments & spices (3% each), pork (2%) and barley, jowar and milk (1% each). However, the prices of arhar (6%), moong (5%), masur (4%), bajra (2%) and maize, gram, rice and egg (1% each) declined.
The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 2.0 percent to 157.2 (Provisional) from 154.1 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of raw silk (15%), rose (14%), raw cotton (11%), copra (5%), castor seed (3%), coir fiber, gaur seed, cotton seed and jasmine (2% each) and linseed, fodder and groundnut seed (1% each). However, the prices of marigold (15%), raw rubber (5%), rape & mustard seed and gingelly seed (4% each), raw jute (3%), sunflower (2%) and soyabean (1%) declined.
The index for 'Minerals' group rose marginally to 248.6 (Provisional) from 248.5 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of barytes (1%). However, the prices of steatite (9%) declined.
FUEL & POWER (Weight 14.91%)
The index for this major group declined by 0.3 percent to 147.6 (Provisional) from 148.0 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of aviation turbine fuel (4%), bitumen (3%) and naphtha (1%). However, the price of light diesel oil (2%) moved up.
MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 64.97%)
The index for this major group rose by 0.3 percent to 127.6 (Provisional) from 127.2 (Provisional) for the previous month. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the month are as follows:-
The index for 'Food Products' group rose by 0.7 percent to 139.3 (Provisional) from 138.3 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of vegetables seeds (8%), cotton seed oil (3%), sugar, groundnut oil, sunflower oil and oil cakes (2% each) and sooji (rawa), copra oil and vanaspati (1% each). However, the prices of salt (11%) and rice bran, ghee, gur, mustard oil cake and palm oil (1% each) declined.
The index for 'Beverages, Tobacco & Tobacco Products' group rose by 0.1 percent to 143.8 (Provisional) from 143.6 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of dried tobacco (3%).
The index for 'Textiles' group rose by 0.6 percent to 116.0 (Provisional) from 115.3 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of gunny bags (non laminated) (11%), acrylic yarn (9%), synthetic yarn, other synthetic fabrics, jute sacking cloth and coir mats & matting (2% each) and cotton yarn (unbleached), synthetic grey cloth, synthetic suiting (incl. blended), jute sacking bag, cotton textiles dyed/printed and mixed fabrics (1% each). However, the prices of polyethylene fabrics (7%), cotton shirting (3%), woolen yarn, gunny and hessian cloth and cotton shirts (2% each) and cotton durries and finished/processed cotton yarn (not knitted) (1% each) declined.
The index for 'Wood & Wood Products' group rose by 0.4 percent to 149.7 (Provisional) from 149.1 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of sawn timber posts / squares (4%). However, the prices of veneer wood (3%) and plywood board (1%) declined.
The index for 'Paper & Paper Products' group rose by 1.2 percent to 123.4 (Provisional) from 121.9 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of books/ periodicals/ journals (9%), laminated paper (3%) and cream laid woven paper, newsprint and bristle paper board (1% each). However, the price of other printing and publishing (1%) declined.
The index for 'Leather & Leather Products' group declined by 0.3 percent to 128.2 (Provisional) from 128.6 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of leather shoe upper (2%). However, the prices of chrome tanned leather (1%) moved up.
The index for 'Rubber & Plastic Products' group rose by 0.5 percent to 124.8 (Provisional) from 124.2 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of bus/truck tyre (8%), plastic bottles and HDPE woven sacks (2% each) and rigid PVC (1%). However, the prices of polyester film, rubber seat assembly and reclaimed rubber (1% each) declined.
The index for 'Chemicals & Chemical Products' group rose by 0.2 percent to 122.5 (Provisional) from 122.3 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of fatty alcohol (7%), synthetic resin (6%), titanium dioxide (4%), acetic acid & its derivatives (3%), other pesticides, chlorine and adhesive & gum (2% each) and phenol or phenol extract, toilet soap, foundry chemical, polyol, alcohol & mixture, fatty acid, acid (inorganic), bleaching powder, non-cyclic compound, vegetable starch and carbon disulphide (1% each). However, the prices of caustic soda & soda ash (6%), additives (4%) and other organic chemicals and other phosphatic fertilizers (1% each) declined.
The index for 'Non-Metallic Mineral Products' group declined by 0.2 percent to 144.3 (Provisional) from 144.6 (Provisional) for the previous month due to lower prices of concrete poles & posts (2%) and grey cement (1%). However, the prices of railway sleeper, fibre glass & glass sheet and hume pipes & spun pipes (1% each) moved up.
The index for 'Basic Metals, Alloys & Metal Products' group rose by 0.2 percent to 133.3 (Provisional) from 133.1 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of gold & gold ornaments (7%), silver (3%), iron castings (2%) and GP/GC sheets, pencil ingots and pig iron (1% each). However, the prices of steel structures and non ferrous alloys (2% each) and non-ferrous casting & forging, sponge iron and aluminum coils/rolls (1% each) declined.
The index for 'Machinery & Machine Tools' group rose by 0.1 percent to 120.5(Provisional) from 120.4 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of food/beverages/tobacco processing machinery (11%), batteries and capacitors (5% each), drive equipment (4%), lathes (3%) and fibre optic cable, air break switches/circuit breaker and electric motor starters (1% each). However, the prices of electric connectors/plugs/sockets/holders (5%), UPS / stabilizer (3%) and battery dry cells and fluorescent tubes (1% each) declined.
The index for ‘Transport, Equipment & Parts’ group rose by 0.3 percent to 120.8 (Provisional) from 120.4 (Provisional) for the previous month due to higher prices of gear boxes & parts (7%) and silencer & damper and horn (1% each).
FINAL INDEX FOR THE MONTH JULY, 2010 (BASE YEAR: 1993-94=100)
For the month of July, 2010 the final Wholesale Price Index for ‘All Commodities’ (Base:1993-94=100) stood at 263.8 as compared to 263.3 (Provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index stood at 10.31% as compared to 9.97 percent (Provisional) reported earlier
