Architecture students to design

steel-intensive village model for south Bengal

 

 

Kolkata, September 13, 2010: Students of architecture engineering will demonstrate their talent at a national-level design competition on a topical theme- a steel-intensive village model for south Bengal.

 

Organized by INSDAG (Institute for Steel development and growth), a non-profit making body established by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India and leading steel producers of the country, the participating students are required to display innovative designs for rural housing and other specified structures like a panchayat (administrative) building, community hall, primary school, high school, health centre, overhead water tank, a toilet block for public, village railway station, sanitation system, internal roads among other facilities.

 

Eleven groups (from East, West, North and South zones) from different engineering colleges have been short listed for the final round in Kolkata to be held on September 14 and 15, 2010. The presentations to be made in the final round will be judged by a panel of jury from four zones. The top five entries will receive cash prizes and a scroll of honour.

 

Explaining the rationale of the competition, Mr Sushim Banerjee, Director General of INSDAG said, “Our idea is to give students a platform to demonstrate their talent. It also gives them an opportunity to interact with industry experts and gain insights into the required skill sets and ways to stay abreast of technologies advancements in architectural technology worldwide.”

 

To add value to the competition INSDAG has organized talk and presentations by eminent architects of the city like Prof. (Dr) Gopal Mitra, Mr Dulal Mukherjee, Mr Debbrata Ghosh and Mr Avijit Sen to share their valuable experience within the budding architects of the future.

 

The competition, which is now into its tenth year, seeks to recognize and reward talented students of architecture engineering in India for excellence and innovation in architectural design. This year’s these “Steel Intensive Village in India” is very topical and inspired by projects which are currently in general demand in the country.
