INDIAN BANK INITIATES FINANCIAL INCLUSION IN W B
Indian Bank, the Chennai-headquartered nationalized Bank opened a branch in Jangipur, Murshidabad District of West Bengal on 26.09.2010. Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Hon’ble Union Finance Minister inaugurated the 1771st branch. He also inaugurated the Biometric ATM at the branch premises and also a Mobile Banking Van with biometric ATM and coin vending machine. A book on Financial Inclusion was released in the function.
Shri T M Bhasin, CMD, Indian Bank welcomed the Hon’ble Finance Minister, other dignitaries and participants. In his Welcome address, Shri T M Bhasin informed that:
Indian Bank has pan-India presence with 1771 branches, all under 100% CBS (Rural-499, Semi-urban-467, Urban-442 and Metro-363) with a total business of Rs.1.62 lakh Crores. The Bank has 2 overseas branches – one in Singapore and another in Colombo.
The Bank provides 24x7 banking service through 1027 ATMs spread all over the country with 70 Biometric ATMs. Uniqueness of the biometric ATMs of the Bank is that the SHGs can withdraw cash by joint operation.
In West Bengal, the Bank has 65 branches with a total business of Rs.6860 Crore and 26 ATMs.
He also said that Indian Bank, being the pioneer in implementing Financial Inclusion, has implemented National Pilot Project at UT of Puducherry in the year 2005. The Bank has opened 22.90 lakh “No Frill” accounts covering 4637 villages across the Country. In West Bengal, 26546 no frills a/cs have been opened in 28 villages.
Under Financial inclusion plan, the Bank has been allotted with 1549 villages with population more than 2000 in 19 States and it is proposed to provide banking services in all the villages through ICT based Smart Card with BC Model before March 2012. In West Bengal, 32 villages with population of more than 2000 will be extended banking services before 2012 under Financial Inclusion Plan.
In the function organized at Mackenji Park, Jangipur, the Union Finance Minister appreciated the efforts made by Indian Bank to have an extensive pan-India presence. He also applauded Indian Bank‘s initiatives towards Financial Inclusion both in rural and urban centres. Indian Bank not only pioneered Financial Inclusion but also pioneered the SHG movement in the Country, said the Hon’ble Finance Minister.
The Hon’ble Union Finance Minister handed over loan sanctions to 10 persons including persons from Weaker Sections, differently abled, SCs & Minorities.
The Hon’ble Minister of State for Finance Shri Namonarayan Meena in his special address congratulated Indian Bank for committed efforts towards the upliftment of the poor and underprivileged under its Financial Inclusion initiatives.
The Mobile Banking Van inaugurated on 26.09.2010 has a biometric ATM inside. Bank’s officials will be moving to villages in the van to extend on-line banking facilities. The uniqueness of Indian Bank’s mobile van is that it has a coin vending machine also. The Mobile Banking Van will visit the following villages, one day in a week:
1. Nista 2. Sujapur 3. Diar Raninagar
4. Giria Kismat 5. Giria 6. Bahura
