Wholesale Price Indices for Primary Articles and Fuel. Power, Light & Lubricants in India (Base: 1993-94 = 100)



Review for the week ended 31st July, 2010 (09 Shravana, 1932 Saka)



The WPI for the week ended 31st July, 2010 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and ‘Fuel. Power, Light & Lubricants’ is given below:



PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%)

The index for this major group declined by 0.1 percent to 308.0 (Provisional) from 308.2 (Provisional) for the previous week.



The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 15.66 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 31/07/2010 (over 01/08/2009) as compared to 14.36 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 24/07/2010) and 6.69 percent during the corresponding week (ended 01/08/2009) of the previous year.



The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-



The index for 'Food Articles' group declined by 0.2 percent to 298.1 (Provisional) from 298.7 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of fruits & vegetables, arhar, fish-marine, masur and bajra (1% each). However, the prices of coffee (3%), tea (2%) and condiments & spices (1%) moved up.



The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 0.2 percent to 289.5 (Provisional) from 289.0 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of raw silk (4%), copra (2%) and raw rubber, gingelly seed, groundnut seed, cotton seed and tobacco (1% each). However, the prices of rape & mustard seed (1%) declined.



FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23%)

The index for this major group remained unchanged at its previous week's level of 386.2 (Provisional). The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis stood at 12.66 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 31/07/2010 over 01/08/2009 as compared to 14.26 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 24/07/2010) and (-)9.88 percent during the corresponding week (ended 01/08/2009) of the previous year.
