Summer Universiade in China: 118 elevators and escalators for international student games

ThyssenKrupp Elevator equipment for sports, accommodation and administrative centers

ThyssenKrupp Elevator has manufactured and installed a total of 116 elevators and two escalators for the 26th World University Summer Games in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. Around 13,000 athletes, coaches and officials from more than 180 countries are expected to attend the major sporting event in mid-August 2011. In terms of participants the Universiade is the world's second-biggest sporting event, surpassed only by the Olympic Games. To enable the athletes to travel comfortably to their accommodation, restaurants and medical and administrative facilities, 28 buildings in the newly built Universiade Village have been fitted with 108 units from ThyssenKrupp Elevator.

When the summer games are over the 492,000 square meter village site will be used by the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology as a new campus. As well as modern lecture hall, research and administrative buildings, the 7,000 students will also benefit from numerous residence halls, a library and a medical center.

A further ten elevators from ThyssenKrupp Elevator will transport athletes in the maritime sports school - the venue for the windsurfing regattas - and in some buildings of the Shenzhen sports school. One particular highlight is an elaborately designed glass panoramic elevator in the school's covered swimming stadium. It operates alongside the ten meter high diving tower and takes the divers directly to their particular platform.

University athletes from all around the world have been competing in various disciplines in the summer and winter games, which take place every two years, since 1959. The organizer is the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Previous host cities have included Tokyo (Japan), Rome (Italy), Duisburg (Germany), Buffalo (USA) and Porto Alegre (Brazil). The next Summer Universiade in 2013 will be hosted by the Russian city of Kazan.
The Elevator Technology business area brings together the ThyssenKrupp Group's global activities in passenger transportation systems.
