Steps to Mitigate Shortage of Power

As per the Load Generation Balance Report (LGBR) for 2011-12 prepared by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), energy shortage and peak shortage in the country have been assessed as 10.3% and 12.9% respectively.

Giving this information in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today, Minister of State for Power Shri K.C.Venugopal said the Government has taken a number of steps to mitigate shortage of power in the country, which include (i) acceleration in generating capacity addition, (ii) rigorous monitoring of on-going generation projects, (iii) coordinated operation and maintenance of hydro, thermal and nuclear and gas based power stations to optimally utilize the existing generating capacity, (iv) strengthening of inter-state and inter-regional transmission capacity for optimum utilization of available power etc. He said, projects aggregating 40,781 MW have already been commissioned during the 11th Plan upto 18th August, 2011 and balance capacity is under execution. As a result of the ongoing efforts, the energy and peaking shortage of power during April to July, 2011 reduced to 6.2% and 9.9% from 11.1% and 13.8% in April to July, 2010 respectively.
