Coal Reserves

As per the latest National Inventory on Indian Coal Resources published by Geological Survey of India, as on 01.04.2011, the total coal resources assessed are about 285862.21 Million Tonnes, of which 114001.60 Million Tonnes or about 40% are proved reserves. At current level of production of about 550 Million Tonnes the resources of coal in the country will last for more than 100 years. However, exploration is a continuous process and new resources get added year on year.

This information was given by the Minister of Coal, Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
