Consultative Committee meeting of Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Discussed revival of sick CPSEs
The first meeting of Parliamentary Consultative Committee of Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises was held under the chairmanship of Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, the Union Minster of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. Shri Arun Yadav, Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises and Dr. Nitish Sengupta, Chairman, Board for Reconstruction of Public Sector Enterprises (BRPSE) were also present.
It was noted that the meeting of Consultative Committee gives an opportunity to the Ministry to have the benefit of suggestions and valuable advice of the Members of Parliament with regard to the policy matters and implementation of various programmes and schemes of the Ministry. The Committee was apprised of the efforts made by Government to revive Central Public Sector Enterprises.
The Committed noted that BRPSE, an Advisory Body constituted to recommend revival and restructuring of sick Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) have so far recommended revival of 55 sick CPSEs. Government has approved revival of 36 CPSEs with a total assistance of Rs. 15,275 crore. As a result of efforts made by Government, 14 sick CPSEs have posted profit in 2007-08 and 2008-09. Bharat Pump & Compressors Ltd. (BPCL), Cement Corporation of India Ltd. (CCI), MECON Ltd., Heavy Engineering Corporation Ltd. (HEC) and Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd. (MECL) made their presentations about their turnaround strategies converting their organizations into profit earning units from earlier loss incurring units.
The Members who attended the Meeting included among others: S/Shri Dr. Bhola Singh, Dr. Mahendrasinh P. Chauhan, Pakauri Lal and Basudev Acharia from Lok Sabha and S/Shri G. Sanjeeva Reddy and R.C. Singh from Rajya Sabha. Dr. S.N. Dash, Secretary, Department of Heavy Industry and Shri Bhaskar Chatterjee, Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises and other senior officers also attended the meeting.
