National Energy Conservation Award 2009 for SAIL's Durgapur Steel Plant

Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited, has bagged the first prize of the prestigious National Energy Conservation (NEC) Awards 2009, in the Integrated Steel Plant (ISP) sector. The NEC Awards of the Ministry of Power, Government of India, recognize industrial units, office buildings, hotels and hospitals, zonal railways, state designated agencies, municipalities and manufacturers of BEE star labeled appliances who have made commendable efforts in energy conservations in their respective fields.

The recognition has come to DSP for its planned and strategic initiatives towards energy conservation.

For an ISP like DSP, more than 80% of the total energy is consumed in the iron making zone, where contribution of coking coal is more than 80%. Better management of coke rate has brought significant improvement in energy consumption in the iron making zone. Coke rate at Blast Furnaces were brought down to 501 kg per tonne of hot metal(thm) in the year 2008-09 from a level of 522 kg per thm in the year 2007-08, through more usage of nut coke and introduction of technologies like coal dust injection (CDI) in Blast Furnaces. Further reduction in coke rate is being attempted through enhanced oxyzen enrichment. At the same time, top pouring route is also being gradually replaced by continuous casting route to lower specific energy consumption.

The plant scored over the competitors by implementing innovative energy saving measures also. The drive for High Pressure Liquor Aspiration (HPLA) system has been converted to Variable Voltage Variable Frequency (VVVF) drive in Battery # 3 of Coke Ovens. Power saving has also been achieved in street light by reduction of supply voltage by utilizing a P-20 device and improving the existing practices leading to a cumulative energy savings of 55.28 lakhs kwh and cost saving of more than Rs.1.55 crores per year.

Mr. P. K. Bajaj, Managing Director, DSP, says “Durgapur Steel Plant is aiming for further energy conservation through reducing coke rate in the Blast Furnaces by using technologies like Coal Dust Injection and bringing operational efficiency in lowering power and fuel consumption. Our objective is to reduce our carbon footprint and deliver our commitment of green steel to the nation.”

Durgapur Steel Plant, which also happens to be largest industrial unit in West Bengal, has been in the limelight for its consistent profits and energy saving measures in the recent years. In the last financial year, the unit delivered a solid waste utilization of 92.83% which is industry best. Similarly, the unit also set a record in the SAIL plants with the best ever specific energy consumption of 6.50 Gcal/tcs in 2008-09.
