Germany’s Commissioner for Arms Control and Disarmament, Ambassador Peter Gottwald, is on a two-day visit to India from 8th – 9th July 2009. Ambassador Gottwald will meet his Indian counterpart, Deputy National Security Advisor, Shekhar Dutt. The Ambassador will also interact with interlocutors of institutions and individuals working in the areas of conflict resolution and disarmament in India, and senior journalists.
Germany has been working with its European Union and NATO partners towards an international arms-control policy. Germany continues to advocate the universalisation and strengthening of existing multilateral treaties and regimes governing non-proliferation and disarmament. Germany pursues a balanced approach aimed at both enhancing and developing the three pillars of the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) – non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The main focuses for the German government in the areas of disarmament and arms control for 2009 are enforcement of the UN Security Council resolutions on Iran, enforcement of the Security Council resolutions on North Korea and preparation for the NPT Review Conference to be held in May 2010.
Ambassador Peter Gottwald was appointed the Commissioner of the Federal Government for Arms Control and Disarmament in July 2008. Earlier, he was the Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations and to other International Organisations in Vienna. From 2003 – 2006, Gottwald served as the Deputy Chief of Mission of the German Embassy in Washington.
