The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would undertake 165 projects under the National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) during 2009. The construction work on these projects is likely to commence within 8 months from the date of award. This includes 10 projects in Andhra Pradesh, 12 in Bihar, 7 in Gujarat, 8 in Haryana, 6 in J & K, 11 in Madhya Pradesh, 14 in Maharashtra and 6 in Uttar Pradesh. The projects are at various stages of bidding , feasibility study, awarding and implementation and belong to NHDP phases III, IV and V. The prominent projects include Hyderabad-Vijayawada, Ahmedabad-Vadodara, Delhi-Agra, Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Jammu-Udhampur Section, Jhansi-Khajuraho, Bhubaneswar-Puri, Pune-Sholapur, Amritsar-Jallandhar, Amritsar-Pathankot, Udaipur-Ahmedabad, Agra-Aligarh, Haridwar-Dehradun and Muzzafarnagar-Haridwar.
In order to expedite the implementation, steps have been taken to expedite land acquisition, shifting of utilities, obtaining clearances from Railways for Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and taking action against non-performing contractors.
