Parliamentary Consultative Committee of Ministry of Power Reviews the Functioning of SJVNL
Union Minister of Power Shri Sushilkumar Shinde has underlined the need to accelerate development of hydro power in the country with the combined efforts of all stakeholders. He was addressing the Meeting of the Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament for the Ministry of Power in New Delhi today. The meeting reviewed the functioning of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL).
Shri Shinde said that India has a huge hydro power potential of 1,48,701 MW out of which only a capacity of 38,706 MW has so far been developed. He added that out of the present total generation capacity of 1,82,689 MW in the country, hydel power thus accounts for 21%.
Elaborating on the works undertaken by SJVNL, the Minister said that it has constructed and is operating the country’s largest hydro power station namely the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station. He said SJVNL as part of its R&D effort is developing new materials for turbine parts in collaboration with National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) to address the high silt problem during monsoon season. Appreciating the innovative measures by the SJVNL, Shri Shinde said the Nathpa Jhakri is now creating records in power generation year after year and in the year 2010-11 it generated highest ever gross energy of 7140 MUs against MOU target of 6700 MUs and design energy of 6612 MU. He added that this year generation is expected to be greater than previous year. The Minister said that during the financial 2010-11 the total income of SJVN was Rs. 1955 crores and SJVN has also paid highest ever dividend of Rs. 331 crores since 2004.
Shri Shinde said that SJVN is currently executing the 412 MW Rampur Hydro Electric Project which is scheduled to be commissioned by September, 2013 in the 12th plan period. He informed that the project is registered with UNFCCC as a Clean Development Project. He said that SJVNL is the first Indian Power Sector CPSU to get a power project registered under CDM and this project is the largest project in India for CDM and the 4th largest in the World. The Minister stated that the emission reductions shall be of the tune of 1.4 million tones of carbon di-oxide per annum which will result in earning of additional revenues of about Rs 80-90 Crore per annum to SJVNL.
Giving details of future plans of the SJVNL, Shri Shinde said that it plans to achieve 5000 MW plus capacity addition by 2020. Besides the above, he said, SJVN has also made a foray into transmission line construction and proposes to construct 312 Km long Dhalkebar-Muzzaffarapur 400 kv transmission line for evacuation of power from its project in Nepal.
Shri Shinde said that in international arena SJVNL bagged 900 MW Arun-III HEP in Nepal through International Competitive bidding for implementation on BOOT basis and has also taken up DPR preparation for two projects in Bhutan namely the 600 MW Kholongchu HEP and the 600 MW Wangchu HEP. He said, the projects are in discussion with Royal Government of Bhutan to execute these projects after forming a Joint Venture with Druk Green Power Corporation of Bhutan.
The Minster also elaborated on the Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives of SJVNL in the vicinity of the project such as providing aid to the construction of referral hospitals and roads, sponsoring meritorious students, adopting technical institutes and engineering colleges, providing mobile health van services, providing drinking water facilities, etc.
Shri K.C. Venugopal, Minister of State for Power was also present on the occasion.
