The President of India, Her Excellency, Smt Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, reviewed the Fleet comprising ships of the Indian Navy, the Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine and the Sea Cadet Corps at Mumbai on 20 December 2011.
In this tradition inherited from the Royal Navy, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces reviews the Indian Fleet once during his or her tenure in office.
A total of 81 warships and 44 aircraft took part in the mega event which included latest MiG29K carrier-borne fighter jets and country’s only aircraft carrier INS Viraat. The president sailed on INS Subhadra and expressed confidence that the fleet would meet any challenge that may threaten the maritime security of India.
The fly past of the maritime forces included Chetak, Sea King, Kamov K-31/28, Advanced Light Helicopters, Tu-142, IL-38, Kiran, Dornier, Sea Harrier and MiG29k fighter jets of the Navy and Coast Guard.
“The Indian Navy is one of the most capable in the region and with its well thought out modernization plans, is destined to grow even further,” said President Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
