Policy for Supplying Coal
In view of the dwindling availability of coal, the policy for supply of coal to new consumers under non-Standing Linkage Committee (Long Term) category, including hard coke manufacturing units, has not been approved by the Coal India Limited (CIL) Board. This information was given by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Coal and Statistics and Programme Implementations, Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
The Minister said that as part of the Annual Plan, the Planning Commission has estimated that during 2011-12, the total coal demand in the country will be 696.03 million tonnes, against which indigenous availability is likely to be 559 million tonnes and the gap is to be met through imports. In view of the overall coal shortage in the country, it may not be possible for the Government to consider any proposal for supply of coal to hard coke manufacturing units, at this stage.
