Coal Based Power Generation Grows by 7.7 Percent in April-October, 2011

There was a growth of 8.6% in electricity generation in the country during April to October, 2011 with coal-based generation representing a growth of 7.7%. However, the Power Utilities reported a generation loss of 5.3 Billion Unit during April to October, 2011, out of which the generation loss of about 188 Million Unit and 48 Million Unit respectively was reported by NTPC in Singrauli and Rihand power stations.

As on 21st November, 2011, 36 power stations, aggregating 44,387 MW had coal stock of less than 4 days.

Main reasons for short supply of coal by Coal India Ltd. and its subsidiaries are :

(i) Less transportation of coal from coal mines to railway sidings.

(ii) Inadequate crushing capacity at the coal mines.

(iii) Law and order problems in the Central Coalfields Limited and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited.

(iv) Excessive rains of the coal fields of Northern Coalfields Limited, Central Coalfields Limited and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Power Shri K.C.Venugopal in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
