SMS Siemag takes over Métis (Pty) Ltd., South Africa

SMS Siemag AG, well know as a global leader in metallurgical plant and machine construction, and generating sales of EUR 2.1 billion in business year 2010 with its workforce of some 6,500 employees, has purchased a majority share in Métis, (Pty) Ltd. of South Africa.
SMS Siemag is part of the SMS group, which in 2010 attracted sales totaling some EUR 3 billion with around 9,200 employees.

Even after the takeover, Métis will continue to operate as a legally Independent company headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa; Sales at Métis in business year2010 came to some EUR 40 million, generated by approx. 60 employees. Active in plant construction and equipment supplies for the ferroalloy Industry for ten years or so, the company has carved out a leading market position for itself in southern Africa.

The range of products and services covers the entire field of planning and supply of equipment and plants, especially for the production of ferrochromium and ferromanganese.
What’s behind the acquisition of Métis is the SMS Siemag strategy of expanding its range in the field of submerged-arc furnace technology for the production of ferroalloys, Si metal, nonferrous metals, calcium carbide etc. for new plants and revamps.

As an integrated process supplier with all-inclusive solutions for both the ferroalloy and nonferrous metal industries, Métis occupies a leading position, with a market share of more than 40%.

Now, with the integration of Métis in this sector, SMS Siemag will be able to strengthen its market position especially in southern Africa. Métis is the market leader in the modernization of submerged-arc furnaces in South Africa.
