At last after crossing all hurdles the old Meghalaya House at Russel Street, Kolkata with a new face duly constructed magnificently with a state of art facilities/amenities is going to take a final shape.

The Hon'ble GAD Minister Mr. A. L. Hek along with the officials from PWD, The TADM Mr. Shangpliang visited the Russel Street site. He  had  visited the Meghalaya House at Delhi two days back . The Delhi House is a three storey building with a built-up area of 20,000 Sq. ft. plus. In comparison with Delhi House, the Kolkata House is a big palatial building of Six Storeys, with basement and office-cum-commercial space, with a total built-up area of 145000 Sq. ft. plus. The Building was scheduled to be completed by the year 2008 end but due to various factors could not be completed now but is well set for completion by this year end. The Russel Street at Kolkata is significant and important in view of its locational advantage and shall be highly beneficial to the students, patients and all sections of people visiting Kolkata from far flung areas of the State, once it is opened. The House is complete in all respects and only Electrical and Sewerage connections are pending. The Hon'ble Minister directed the Contractors to complete the building in all respects without any further delay. The Contractors expressed their inability to complete for want of funds and informed that they have not been paid a single penny for the last 8/10 months from the Govt. of Meghalaya. Various vendors who have supplied the valued materials could not be paid for lack of funds. While 99% of the work has been completed, only 50% of payment has been recveived so far. Incidentally, The Delhi Meghalaya House was originally to be constructed  at a cost of Rs. 10 Crores and scheduled to be completed in the year 2007. Now after revised/re-revised the cost has gone up to Rs.25 Crores.  The GAD Minister assured to look into it and take necessary steps.
