The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have just announced a $10.3 million grant to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to fund the development of Golden Rice. They note that the inventors of Golden Rice, Professor Ingo Potrykus and Dr. Peter Beyer, donated the results of their scientific research to benefit resource-poor farmers in developing countries.
In a simultaneously timed press release, Dr. Gerard Barry, Golden Rice Network coordinator and International Rice Research Institute’s (IRRI) Golden Rice project leader states: “Our latest stage of work...will bring in Helen Keller International – a new partner from the nutrition sector – to further understand how well Golden Rice can reduce vitamin A deficiency.” The Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) are leading the development of Golden Rice in their countries in collaboration with IRRI. This project plans to submit information on Golden Rice to regulators as early as 2013 in the Philippines and 2015 in Bangladesh.
