Skills Development in Bangladesh

Training and Vocational Education Training has been a special focus sector in Bangladesh to provide the economy with workers who have relevant knowledge and skills in trades and occupations in demand from both domestic and foreign labor markets.

Recognizing the fact that in the current global economic environment, countries like Bangladesh will need to stem the losses in jobs, exports, and in overseas remittances in the short-run, while simultaneously building the Training and Vocational Education Training (TVET) system to deliver immediately employable graduates, the Government, with support from the World Bank, is preparing the project, Skills and Training Enhancement Project (STEP).

The aim of STEP is to improve the overall policy regime of Technical Vocational Education and Training in the country and to strengthen capacity and selected training institutions to produce better skilled trainees for domestic and overseas employment. The project will be of five and a half years duration and is proposed to be implemented from July 2010.

The Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Labor and Employment and the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment along with the World Bank team have reached an agreement on the scope of project components and outcomes, the tentative costs and important milestones for completing the preparation of the project.

The Government is now undertaking a number of tasks including preparation of Development Project Proposal, disclosure of environmental and social issues related to the project and pre-implementation activities crucial for the success of the project. Appraisal of the proposed project by the World Bank will follow the completion of the above activities.
