Oil Industry Safety Awards Presented for 2008-09; ONGC Bags Seven Awards – the Maximum

SLOGAN “SAFETY FIRST” SHOULD BE A MOTTO FOR EVERYONE: PETROLEUM MINISTER

  

Shri Murli Deora, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas has said that necessary steps would be taken to make Oil Industry Safety Directorate(OISD) a statutory body for the entire upstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry. Speaking at the “Oil Industry Safety Awards” presentation ceremony here today, the Minister said that this would be done to ensure vigilance in view of the huge investments being made in the hydrocarbon sector for sustaining energy security of the country. He added “it is imperative that this sector is given topmost priority on safety and security aspects”. Emphasising the need for safety and security in the sector, he further said “we have to be vigilant as these natural assets are pivotal for our country’s economic and social development”.



Shri Murli Deora underlined the need for maintaining availability of essential fuels by saying that the hydrocarbon sector in India has immensely contributed towards the economic growth of the country and any disruption can play havoc besides causing inconvenience to the public. He called for “Safety First” slogan to be made a motto for everyone and pointed out that OISD will continue to play crucial role in advising oil companies to maintain mandatory safety standards. Recalling that Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas constituted OISD in 1986 to enhance safety level in hydrocarbon industry, he said that industry has immensely benefited from standardization and safety audits work done by OISD.



Speaking on the occasion, Shri Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas urged upon the Industry to introspect whether it is sufficiently investing in safety to make work place free from accidents. He reiterated that the preventive measures should be in place on sustained basis to eliminate untoward incidents in oil 7 gas sector. It is important that safety aspects are considered as a part of ‘core activity’ in the organization.



“Oil Industry Safety Awards” for the year 2008-09 were presented by Shri Murli Deora, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas & Shri Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas to the Chief Executives of Winning Oil & Gas organizations in a ceremony organized by “Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD)”. Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited has bagged maximum number of awards i.e. 7 in numbers; while Indian Oil Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and GAIL(India) Limited have won 4 awards each. The other award winners are Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited(3), Reliance Industries Limited(1), List of award winners is given below.



These awards are given by Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas every year recognizing the efforts of Oil & Gas Industry’s in enhancing safety performance. This year the number of safety awards has been increased from nine (9) to nineteen (19). The awards include ‘offshore safety in production platforms & drilling rigs’, and introduction of Awards under ‘Most Safe Industry in last three years’ for Refinery, OMC & Onshore Oil & Gas Asset respectively. Further, to motivate individual employee towards importance of safety, ‘cash awards’ were given to individual who have made significant contribution to avoid accidents at work place. The criteria for selection of these Awards is based on various parameters like Complexity of the facility, volumes handled, safety management system with minimum fires, accidents & losses.
