Just shortly after the establishment of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), another mechanism on the rights of women and children, the ASEAN Commission on the Rights of Women and Children, will be set up next year.
"This and other regional mechanisms shall be part and parcel of the ASEAN human rights regime under the single umbrella of the AICHR," H.E. Abhisit Vejjajiva, Prime Minister of Thailand, said today in his remarks at the Inaugural Ceremony of the AICHR.
The terms of reference of the ASEAN Commission on the Rights of Women and Children has recently been approved by the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Social Welfare and Development.
Each Member State is to appoint one representative on women's rights and one on children's rights by next year.
The work of the soon-to-be established Commission will be in line with the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which, all ASEAN Member States are parties to.
