Javier Solana,
EU High Representative for the CFSP,
on the Presidential elections in Afghanistan

Javier SOLANA, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP),
made the following statement on the result of the first round of Presidential elections in
Afghanistan:
"I welcome the announcement of the Independent Election Commission today and the statement of President Karzai accepting a second round of elections. I urge all parties with a stake in the
elections to do their utmost to ensure that the turn out of the second round provides for a credible and secure process. It should lead to a credible and legitimate result.
This has been a very challenging election. The second round has to deliver the establishment of an effective government, committed to addressing the needs of the country.
I would also like to commend the work of the Electoral Complaints Commission. Many others have also provided valuable contributions to the process, in particular national and international
observers, including the EU Election Observation Mission.
I would like to take the opportunity to re-emphasise the EUs long-term commitment to Afghanistan and its people."
