Ahmedabad, July 3, 2009: Hundreds of students and their teachers pledged to protect, preserve and enhance the environment as General V.P. Malik, Former Chief of Army Staff, AVSM & PVSM, launched a rainwater-harvesting (RWH) project in Delhi Public School (DPS) Ahmedabad, one of the largest schools in the city with over 4500 students. The school in project partnership with Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. (HCCBPL) has commissioned the project, which has the potential to harvest 9 million liters of water at normal rainfall. The approach adopted for the RWH project in DPS is of collecting roof top rain water and diverting it to recharge well and ground water table. This collected water can be used for most of the ancillary purpose and will also have a positive impact on the water resource which will benefit the school and the surrounding community. Present at the dedication ceremony were distinguished guests including Mr. Hiten Vasant, Director of DPS, Mr. Sunil Trivedi, Principal of DPS, Mr. Deepak Jolly, Vice President, Public Affairs & Communication, Coca- Cola India, Mr. Milind Pingle, Region Vice President, HCCBPL and the esteem members of the Advisory Council for Environment & Sustainability set by Coca-Cola India.
Mr. Sunil Trivedi, Principal, DPS School, said, “We are thankful to all guests and dignitaries for their encouragement by being here today. I would like to urge my students and teachers to be the catalysts in society and encourage the communities at large to take up projects like water harvesting. I am sure this initiative will encourage other schools and people in general to harvest rainwater & avoid depletion of water level.”
Speaking on the occasion Captain Nickil Baswan, Region Manager, Public Affairs and Communication, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. said, “Water is the most important ingredient for survival. Rainwater Harvesting, recycling and water conservation need to be adopted by each community so that we are able to cope up with the increasing water scarcity. It is our responsibility to educate people especially the students about conserving water for the future. This project will not only ensure water sustainability but it will also create awareness among the students on water conservation. I hope that we see more such examples of private-public partnership like those between school authority and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd in the area of water conservation and recharging ground water”
The School with its well planned infrastructure is environmentally conscious and does its bit to create awareness and train students to protect the environment.
