National Awards for Meritorious Performance in Power Sector Conferred
Union Minister of Power Shri Sushilkumar Shinde gave away the National Awards for Meritorious Performance in the Power Sector at a function in New Delhi today. Speaking on the occasion Shri Shinde called for “Clean, sustainable and cheap power”. He added that the sector has seen capacity addition never seen before and at a rapid speed. The Minister, however said there are still difficulties persisting in power sector, particularly in distribution. He expressed confidence that the difficulties faced by power distribution sector would be sorted out in a short period of time. He appreciated the participation of women in the field of power distribution through rural distribution franchisees. Minister of State for Power Shri K.C. Venugopal, in his speech too stressed the importance of increasing production and efficiency at competitive prices so as to improve the quality of life of the people of the country. He said a capacity addition of about 76,000 MW is required during the 12th Plan and a capacity addition of about 93,000 MW is being envisaged for the 13th Plan.
The awards instituted in 1983 have evolved over a period of time to cover various facets of power sector with the objective of developing a spirit of competitiveness among the generating stations in thermal, hydro and nuclear generation, transmission and distribution utilities in operation and maintenance and early completion of thermal, hydro and transmission projects. The awards also encourage environment protection as well as aim at improving the efficiency and productivity of the power utilities. 24 awards were given for meritorious performance under different categories in 2009-10 while 26 were given for 2010-11.
