South Steel Company to receive second rolling mill featuring MEER drive finishing block

South Steel Company, part of Pan Kingdom Invest, Saudi Arabia, has placed an order with SMS Meer, Germany, for the design and delivery of a  combined wire rod and bar mill with a capacity of 500,000 typ, to be built in Jizan Economic City in southern Saudi Arabia.

SMS Concast and SMS Meer have already supplied a complete minimill for this complex, comprising a steel plant with an annual production rate of 1 million t and an integrated rolling mill for the production of rebars with an annual capacity of 500,000 t.

The new combined mill comprises a 100-tph walking beam furnace for billets with dimensions of 150 mm x 150 mm x 14 m. The roughing, intermediate and finishing mill consists of HL (housingless) stands in an H/V arrangement. One of the key components of the wire rod  outlet is the ten-stand finishing block featuring MEER drive –the state-of-the-art, highly advanced single drive technology from SMS Meer. The formats rolled on this block are fed via the laying head to the loop cooling conveyor (LCC), or to the cooling bed via an HSD system. Integrated quenching and self-tempering facilities are available for both lines.

The high-speed delivery system (HSD) patented by SMS Meer is located at the entry end of the cooling bed, enabling bars to be processed at speeds of up to 41 m/s.

The plant also has a fully automatic bundling and tying station for bars, as well as a coil handling line including coil compactor.

The new mill is to commence production in mid-2013.
