Drop Dow

Dow Chemical think they've won. After a media storm, a massive social media backlash and 13,000 people joining Lorraine Close’s petition, Dow Chemical have dropped their logo from the Olympic stadium, and the Indian Olympic Associaition President has publicly backed the campaign.

But Dow remain a sponsor of the 2012 London Olympics. And while they will be breathing a sigh of relief, it’s clear that the campaign is working. Another huge surge in signatures on Lorraine’s petition will up the pressure again -- and could ensure Dow are dropped as a sponsor completely. Can you help Lorraine reach 20,000 signatures by signing the petition?

For many survivors of Bhopal, it’s important for Dow Chemical to own up to its responsibilities rather than sponsoring the Olympics. Rashida Bee, a Bhopal survivor that last week helped hand-deliver 12,000 signatures to the Olympic Committee says that:

"Getting Dow out of Olympics is a significant step towards making Dow fulfill its legal liabilities in Bhopal and sending Dow a message that it may run away from the courts but it cannot run from the court of the public opinion"

The coming days are critical for the success of Lorraine’s campaign. Dow Chemical and the Olympic Committee will be hoping that attention fades on the petition and that they can continue to reap th e rewards of being an Olympic sponsor. A UK MP has also released documents showing irregularities in the procurement process of Dow's Olympics sponsorship.

But both the Olympic Committee and Dow Chemical will be watching closely for any sign of a renewed backlash. If the petition surges to 20,000 supporters by Friday, the pressure will force the committee to drop Dow completely.
