Mundra coal terminal to be operational by March

The 60 million-tonne (mt) dedicated
coal terminal at Mundra Port and SEZ (MPSEZ) is in the final stage of completion, and is expected to be operational some time in February-March 2011, according to sources. The Adani Group-promoted terminal will handle about 40 mt of imported coal for two power stations of Tata Power (4,000 MW) and Adani Power (4,620 MW) at Mundra, Gujarat, and the balance may be used either to supply imported coal to other power stations, under implementation by Adani Power or for trading purposes.

The completion of the dedicated coal handling facility will also free capacity from the existing multi-purpose terminal in MPSEZ, part of which is now being used to meet the requirement of the existing 1,320 MW (4 X 330 MW) capacities of Adani Power Ltd (APL). The capacities are slated to increase to 1,980 MW in a few weeks with the commissioning of the first 660 MW unit. The entire 4,620 MW facility is scheduled to be operational in 2010-11, requiring 22 mt of coal, mostly imported, annually.

Supercritical unit

Tata Power, in the meantime, has reported that the first 800 MW supercritical unit of the 4,000 MW (5 X 800 MW) designated ultra mega power project (UMPP), is expected to be operational in September 2011.

“Mundra UMPP is progressing as per schedule. Overall project progress achieved is 65 per cent. Erection of boiler pressure parts for Units 3, 4 and 5 is progressing well. Work on chimneys and 400 kV switchyard is proceeding as per schedule,” a company spokesperson told Business Line.

The coal requirement on completion is estimated at 18 mt, to be routed through the upcoming terminal.
