Setting up of New Steel Plants
The Minister of State in the Ministry of Steel, Shri A. Sai Prathap has said that NMDC Limited, a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Steel has decided to set up a 3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) integrated green field steel plant at Nagarnar, Chhattisgarh State, at a cost of around Rs.15525 crore. NMDC Limited has also signed an Memorandum of Understanding to set up a green field steel plant in Karnataka State with an initial capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on 10.12.2010 he said, Steel demand in India is growing. In order to meet the future steel requirement from domestic sources of production, Government encourages setting up of new steel production capacities in the country. Apart from the public sector companies, a large number of private investors have also signed Memoranda of Understanding with various State Governments to set up steel production units in the country. The demand position is however dependent on various cyclical and economic factors and needs to be assessed as an ongoing exercise and the capacity building is tuned to the demand situation.
