Coal Based Thermal Power Projects
Ministry of Environmental and Forests have accorded environmental clearances to 47 coastal based thermal power projects after following the process as provided in the Environmental Impact Assessment Notification, 2006 and Coastal Regulation Zone Notification 1991.
Developmental projects, including thermal power projects, are required to undertake the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies and prepare Environment Management Plan (EMP), for mitigating the environmental impacts, which are then appraised by the Expert Appraisal Committee for thermal Power plant constituted by the Ministry.
The project level Environment Impact Assessment studies are undertaken by the project proponent and not by the Ministry.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Shri Jairam Ramesh in a written reply to a question by S/Shri Ahir Vikrambhai Arjanbhai Maadam And E.G. Sugavanam in Lok Sabha today.
