2010 World Human Rights Day:

 

Terrorism and Human Rights: Balancing the Rights of Victims and the Rights of Accused

 

 

Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar (Gujarat), India and the Gujarat Law Society, Ahmedabad are pleased to invite you to the celebration of 2010 World Human Rights Day.

 

While the human rights leaders, policy-makers, human rights commissions, judiciary across the world are confronting with the challenges of terrorism, the challenges to provide and ensure rights of victims need utmost urgent attention. GNLU and the GLS will celebrate the 2010 World Human Rights Day* on Sunday, 12 December 2010. Professor Shimon Shetreet, International Jurist Awardee 2010 and Professor of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Head of the Sacher Institute of Legislative Research and Comparative Law, Israel will deliver the Chief Guest Address on the topic of the Terrorism and Human Rights: What about the Rights of Victims while ensuring the Rights of Accused?

 

Prof Shetreet has been a cabinet minister in the Prime Minister Rabin's cabinet and held high public offices. He served as Member of the Knesset the Israeli Parliament, as cabinet Minister in the Prime Minister Rabin Government where he served as Minister of Economy and Planning, Minister of Science and Technology, Minister in charge of the Second Television and Radio Authority and Minister of Religious Affairs. In addition to his distinguished academic career, he also held high business positions including member of the board of Bank Leumi and Chairman of the Board of Mishaan.

 

Hon’ble Justice Mukesh R. Shah, Gujarat High Court will deliver a distinguished guest of honour address. The function will take place at the Gujarat Law Society Auditorium, opposite Law Garden, Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad, from 1000 to 1200 hours. The addresses will be followed by questions and answer session and high tea.

 

Students, members of the judiciary, bar, academicians, researchers, policy-makers, police personnel, human rights organizations, and all who are concerned with the promotion and protection of human rights of individual in the age of terrorism are invited to the function.
