Secretary-General of ASEAN Receives Slovak Ambassador
ASEAN Secretariat, 8 February 2010
ASEAN has been presented with a new Ambassador: H.E. Štefan Rozkopál of Slovakia. Ambassador Rozkopál met the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, today at the ASEAN Secretariat to present his letter of credentials.
Expressing his delight at the latest appointment, Dr Surin said that “Ambassador Rozkopál is no stranger to ASEAN matters and therefore I am confident that under his guidance Slovakia stands to boost its relationship with the region.” During his service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ambassador Rozkopál was once posted as an officer for ASEAN countries.
According to Ambassador Rozkopál, ASEAN and the European Union (EU) – of which Slovakia is a member country – share a number of common goals and recognised the benefits of regional integration. “The new ASEAN Charter and an enlarged EU creates wider and more deeply integrated regional markets that bring benefits to consumers and companies in both the EU and Southeast Asia,” he said. The Ambassador also urged greater awareness-building about ASEAN, especially about its economic environment in Slovakia, and also about his country in the ASEAN region.
Under the Charter, non-ASEAN Member States and relevant inter-governmental organisations may appoint and accredit Ambassadors to ASEAN.
Ambassador Rozkopál is concurrently Ambassador to Indonesia.
