ERIA Tops Economic Research Institutions in Indonesia
ASEAN Secretariat, 12 February 2010
The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) was recently ranked the no. 1 economic research institution in Indonesia by RePEc (Research Papers in Economics), a collaborative effort of hundreds of volunteers in 70 countries to enhance the dissemination of research in economics. The ranking of the Indonesian economic research institutes was compiled by the University of Connecticut in the United States. Eighteen other Indonesian think-tanks are registered with this network.
The ranking was based on data about authors registered with RePEc, bibliographic data, citation analysis and popularity data. The SMERU Research Institute and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Indonesia, both based in Jakarta, were ranked second and third respectively.
The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, who expressed delight on learning about the development said, “ERIA has worked hard to establish itself in Jakarta, home of the ASEAN Secretariat. I am confident that this development will improve our relationships with our stakeholders and help ERIA grow and further improve its work and stature.”
ERIA was established to support the ASEAN Secretariat in making policy recommendations at regional governmental meetings, such as the East Asia Summit (EAS). ERIA contributes to the regional efforts for East Asian economic integration in wide-ranging policy areas from trade and investment to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), human resource development, infrastructure, energy, among others. ERIA's main role is to provide the policy analyses and recommendations to Leaders or Ministers in strong partnership with the ASEAN Secretariat and existing research institutes. ERIA also undertakes capacity building activities to strengthen policy research capacities, particularly in the less developed countries.
