Secretary-General Expresses Condolences over Haiti Earthquake
ASEAN Secretariat, 15 January 2010
The Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, has expressed his condolences to the Haitians, especially to the families of those who had been killed or injured, in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti on Monday.
“I am saddened to learn about the extensive loss and damage that the earthquake has caused in Port-au-Prince,” Dr Surin said. “My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti in their time of grief,” he added. The 7.0-magnitude earthquake centred more than 15 km away from the capital but caused massive destruction.
The Foreign Ministers of ASEAN, who were meeting in Viet Nam, also expressed their deep sympathies on learning of the damage to properties and infrastructure and loss of lives caused by the earthquake. They said that each of their respective Governments would take appropriate action to send assistance to Haiti.
