The steeluniversity Challenge 2009/2010 ready to launch
Brussels, 19 January 2010 – The fifth steeluniversity Challenge will begin at 12:00 GMT on Wednesday, 27 January 2010 and will run for 24 hours. Aimed at university and college students and new employees in the steel industry supply chain, this online competition will use the steeluniversity.org website’s secondary steelmaking and plate rolling simulations. The task is to make steel plate for a yellow goods (construction and agricultural equipment) application.
Participants can make an unlimited number of attempts to achieve the given specification at lowest total cost. In the last Challenge 478 teams from 26 countries took part.
Two prizes will be awarded by the World Steel Association to the best teams in the Industry and Student categories. The results of the Challenge will be announced on 1 February, 2010.
The Industry winner of the Challenge 2008 was a team from Baosteel and the winning Student team was from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne.
steeluniversity.org won the European Academic Software Awards (EASA) in 2004 and the steeluniversity project team was recognised with the AIST’s Benjamin F. Fairless Award in 2008.
The steeluniversity.org website is a free and innovative e-learning resource focused on all aspects of steel, including steelmaking technology and the multitude of steel applications. It provides highly interactive, game-like simulations of the major steelmaking processes in real-time. This award-winning, on-line initiative is developed and sponsored by the World Steel Association.

Yellow goods are construction and agricultural equipment such as fork lift trucks and tractors.
steeluniversity.org resources are used by more than 100 steel companies and 700 universities worldwide. Many of its modules have been translated into other languages, including Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Korean, Spanish, Russian, German and Japanese.
The World Steel Association (worldsteel) is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. worldsteel represents approximately 180 steel producers (including 19 of the world's 20 largest steel companies), national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes. worldsteel members produce around 85% of the world's steel.
