Department of Heavy Industry- A Major Stake-Holder in National Economy
  

YEAR END REVIEW-2009



Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL) one of the Maharatna PSE under the Department of Heavy Industry secured following major orders during the year 2009 (upto November):-



· Successfully designed, developed and tested 420 kN and 320 kN Porcelain Disc Insulators for 800 kV High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Lines and has become the only supplier in the world for these type of insulators.



· Achieved a major milestone with the manufacture and supply of Space Grade Solar Panels to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for their first satellite export project for EADS-Astrium of Europe.



· Four major contracts from NTPC, NLC Tamil Nadu Power Ltd. and Mahagenco cumulatively valued at around Rs. 7,000 crore for the supply and installation of main plant equipment for thermal power project with a cumulative capacity of 3,250 MW to be located in the State of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

· Secured an order valued at Rs. 3,150 crore from Madhya Pradesh Power Generating Company Limited for installation of two sets of 600 MW each at their upcoming Malwa Thermal Power Project in Madhya Pradesh through international competitive bidding.



· Won the first ever order for Nuclear Steam Generator for new rating of 700 MWe valued at Rs. 345 crore placed by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited for their Kakrapara Atomic Power Project in Gujarat.



· Contract for the main plant package at the upcoming Avantha Bhandar Thermal Power Project in Chhattisgarh, valued at Rs. 1,475 crore, placed by Korba West Power Company Limited for new rating unit of 600 MW thermal Power Plant for their green field power

· Successfully Commissioned two Grid Interactive Solar Power if 100 KWp each in Lakshadweep as a part of India’s largest Solar Power based Island Electrification Project in India



· Largest ever order in the Industrial Segments for Captive Power Plants cumulatively valued at Rs. 4015 crore from Hindalco Industries Ltd. for the supply and erection of the main plant package for its upcoming Captive Power Plants (6x150 MW) at Aditya Aluminium in Orissa

· Achieved a major milestone with the despatch of Boiler columns for the first supercritical boiler, being manufactured by BHEL.



Other achievements of BHEL in India and abroad:



· BHEL’s thermal power generating sets achieved record generation of 403.43 billion units of electricity during the year 2008-09 as against 387.71 billion units in the previous year contributing 79% of the total power generated in the country from coal based thermal sets.



· BHEL has achieved a major success in the Middle East Region by securing the first order valued at Rs. 375 crore for two Gas Turbine Generating Units of 126 MW each from Oman as part of the prestigious six year “Price Agreement (rate contract)” for 126 MW rating Gas Turbine Generator Packages” with OPD.





The Centralised Stamping Unit established at Jagdishpur was dedicated to the nation by Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Parliament on 17th August.2009



· In international arena, the largest ever export contract of Tishreen 2x200MW thermal Power Plant Syria signed on 29.10.2009.



· MOU signed with Ministry of Power, Govt. of Nigeria for setting up three 500MW power plants at three different locations in Nigeria.



· MOU has been signed between BHEL and MPPGCL on November 17, 2009 for setting up of a Joint Venture Company to build, own and operate a 2x800MW Super Critical Thermal Power Plant in Khandwa, MP.



Various Awards won by BHEL


Six thermal power station equipped with generating equipment manufactured by BHEL were awarded with Govt. of India’s Meritorious Award for excellent performance based on operating availability and saving on account of reduced inputs.


Top Export Award for the nineteenth year in succession. The award was Conferred on BHEL in the category ‘Star Performer in 2007-08: Product Group of Motors, Generators and Transformers - Large Enterprise’, the award was presented by the Hon’ble Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Anand Sharma on 29.08.09


India Pride Gold Award, instituted by Dainik Bhaskar Group for excellence in Heavy Industries, was presented by Hon'ble Union Home Minister to CMD BHEL on 09.10.2009.


MoU Excellence Award for the year 2006-07 for the highest growth rate in Market Capitalisation was presented by Hon'ble Prime Minister, to CMD BHEL on 15.10.2009.



II. Engineering Projects India Ltd. (Major orders booked by EPI)



· Secured orders worth Rs.1317.43 crores during the month of August, 2009. The major projects secured include Construction of ESI Medical & PG Institute at Joka, Kolkata for value of Rs.514.58 crores. Construction of Medical College & Hospital at Baltikuri, Kolkata for a value of Rs.761.70 crores.



· Secured orders worth Rs.250.65 crores during the month of October, 2009 for construction of Border Outposts (BoPs) for Border Security Force along the Indo Bangladesh Border in Mizoram & Tripura for a value of Rs. 75.65 crore. Construction of Flood Lighting along Indo Bangladesh Border in the State of Mizoram for a value of Rs. 150.00 crore. Development of Regional Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) IN Bangalore for a value of Rs. 25.00 cror



III HMT Ltd.



HMT Watches Limited participated in the HITEX International Watch Expo-2009 Exhibition held from 27th to 30th November 2009 at Hyderabad.



IV Some of the activities of National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRIP) includue .



· Commissioning and handing over of EMC lab at VRDE, Ahmednagar took place on 16th August, 2009 in the august presence of Hon’ble Minister, and Hon,ble Minister of State, Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises. The ABS Test Tracks are scheduled to be completed by March, 2010.



· Under the Rs. 1718 crore NATRIP Project, which envisages setting up of world class modern testing, homologation and R&D centres at 7 locations across India, so far works have been completed for Rs. ……. crore, work in advance stages at all sites to ensure completion in all respects by end of 2011..



V. Automotive Sector


The Indian Automobile Vehicle Industry witnessed a crisis in recent past owing to global economic slowdown. To tide over the situation Govt. of India took immediate remedial action and announced three stimulus packages (First on 7.12.2008, second on 2.1.2009 and third on 24.2.2009). As a result the automobile sector posted positive results with all the segments posting good growth figures, barring M&HCV, M&HCV goods carrier category and 3-wheeler goods carriers category. The passenger vehicle segment of the automobile sector witnessed 21.21% in domestic sales for the period April to November 2009 over the corresponding period last year. On the export front, the Indian automobile industry witnessed a growth of 8.16% for the period April to November 2009 over the corresponding period last year.


DHI, in collaboration with five other Ministries and SIAM and ACMA, organised the 4th International Environmentally Friendly Vehicle Conference & Rally in Delhi between 23rd & 25th , November, 2009 which saw very high level participation by delegates from across the world. India also took over the chairmanship of the Informal Group on EFVs from Germany.



VII. OTHER MAJOR ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT



1. A National Seminar on emerging & existing opportunities In the Capital Goods Industry was organized by Department of Heavy Industry in association with CII. on 27.02.2009 at New Delhi. The Seminar was addressed by a number of prominent speakers both from the Government and private sector dealing with the Capital Goods Industry. The seminar provided important inputs for Government Policy formulation in regard to the Capital Goods Sector.

2. Hon’ble Minister(HI&PE) held meetings with Chief Executives of the Public Sector Enterprises under Department of Heavy Industries and attended detailed presentation on their functioning. During these meetings, strategic options for their revival, restructuring and business promotion were discussed in detail

3. The Hon’ble Minister (HI&PE) held Meetings with the Captains of Indian Industries of Automobile, Heavy Electricals and Machine Tools Sectors and with the representatives of import Industry organisation such as CII, FICCI, SIAM etc. to ascertain from them important issues affecting their growth prospects, that require Government intervention

4. A specific Action Plan for initiating certain important measures during the first 100-Days of the new Government has been drawn and follow up action are being taken.



VIII. Performance of major PSEs



Production of the PSEs under the Department stood at Rs. 33335.74 cr. during January to November, 2009 as against Rs. 28260.65 cr. during the corresponding period last year. This shows an increase of 17.96%.
