Eastern India’s biggest Wedding Carnival in Kolkata



Saptapadi, a four-day long wedding fair, was organised at the Netaji Indoor Stadium, Kolkata from February 27 – March 02, 2009. The carnival happening for the second time in Kolkata is the biggest of its kind in eastern India. This fair was inaugurated by Shri Subhas Chakraborty, Hon’ble Minister in Charge, Transport, Sports and Youth Services, Government of West Bengal. 


There has been a major growth in the Indian wedding industry in recent years. The Indian wedding industry is Rs 1,250 billion big and is growing at 25-30% annually. Kolkata is the second biggest market for the wedding industry next only to North India. 

Kolkata attracts a large number of shoppers planning to host weddings in their families from North Bengal, neighbouring states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa, the seven north-eastern states and neighbouring countries like Bangladesh. For such shoppers, Kolkata is the closest market that offers the widest range of options in wedding merchandise. 

At Saptapadi, wedding centric goods and services were converged on a single platform. With over 60 participants from India and abroad, the fair attracted more than 40, 000 visitors. It showcased offerings in terms of outfits, trousseaus for brides and grooms, jewellery, cosmetics, bridal make-up, cosmetic surgery, slimming techniques and packages, variety of food menus, furniture, home appliances, honeymoon packages, etc. Some important participants were Bangladesh’s famous Pyara Jamdaani sarees, Golecha Jewellers, Mangal Gems and Raniwala Jewellers from Jaipur, Daneli from Mumbai and Gitanjali. 

Gift vouchers worth Rs.1 lac from Tanishq were given in lucky draws to shoppers everyday.

The average turnover of the fair has increased 15-20% compared to last year. Saptapadi will again take place next year from 5-7 February, 2010.
