SunEdison Awarded Best Solar Power Producer in India

New Delhi (INDIA), September 10 - Global solar energy provider SunEdison, a subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc., {NYSE: WFR}, was awarded “Best Solar Power Producer in India” at the Regulators & Policymakers Retreat (RPR) 2012 organized by Independent Power Producers Association of India (IPPAI).

SunEdison has become a solar power leader in India with over 50 MW of interconnected solar electricity in India today. The company’s projects range from small rooftop installations to South Asia’s largest solar field in Gujarat.

“Our objective in presenting these awards was to acknowledge and recognize the important work undertaken by the solar developers in the country,” said V. Subramanian, former Secretary of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. Considering they started their operations only three years ago in India, contribution of SunEdison in the solar space has been significant and praiseworthy. Their initiatives in getting the projects commissioned as "developers" also in quick time, have been well appreciated and that is recognized by this award.’’

Along with utility scale projects, SunEdison has implemented innovative initiatives such as the Narmada Canal solar project, considered to be an engineering and design marvel in solar industry globally, as well as the recently launched Eradication of Darkness program which is providing the village of Meerwada 24x7 electricity and will bring solar-powered energy to an additional 29 rural villages that have never had reliable electricity.

“This is a significant milestone for SunEdison in India and is a testament to our commitment in the region,” said Pashupathy Gopalan, SunEdison’s Managing Director of South Asia and Sub-Saharan Operations in accepting the honor. “This award recognizes us for our executional abilities, relentless innovation and a solid commitment to a sustainable energy future. The IPPAI award further establishes our credibility and leadership in solar energy services and we’re thankful to IPPAI. We are also grateful to MNRE, IREDA, NVVN, State Governments and our financial partners IFC, OPIC, L&T Infra, HDFC and IDFC for supporting us in our endeavors.”

The Regulators & Policymakers Retreat provides a platform for various stakeholders to exchange experiences and discuss emerging challenges and complexities in the growth path of India as it moves from command to market economy.
