Merchants' Chamber of Commerce

Shri Sudesh Sonthalia. President, Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce paid heartiest compliments to Smt. Mamata Banerjee for leading her Party to decisive and remarkable victory at the hustings. He attributes it to Smt. Banerjee’s grit and absolute dedication to her cause, relentless hard work and pragmatism. Shri Sonthalia feels that with her brilliant vision, catholicity of outlook and love for the people, Smt. Banerjee is certain to usher in a new era of economic, social and cultural resurgence in West Bengal.

Shri Sonthalia further expects that the following issues would receive her immediate attention. These are  :

a.             Re-building of the State’s image on the basis of strategic location, abundant natural resources, vast pool of technical and skilled manpower, and large English-speaking population.

b.            Re-structuring, reforms and re-motivation of the Administrative set-up, both in the Central Secretariat and District-level Offices so that they respond quickly to the problems of the people, industry and agriculture and take effective action to solve them and achieve the various economic and welfare targets to be set by the new government within the given time-frame.

c.             No less important is the review of Law and Order problems from a fresh angle and making the officers in-charge responsive to the problems faced by the people in all localities and places. An Ombudsman at the State level may be appointed to ensure justice to the people.

d.             The essential concerns of the people are related to education, healthcare centres & hospitals, Police Stations, municipal offices and local bodies etc. Immediate steps are necessary to bring about substantial improvement in their operation system, charges & regulations, quality of service, dealings with the people etc., so that the public get a fair deal and quick response on a positive note, cutting across party-lines and caste or creed.

e.             Another issue of concern is the escalating prices of essential commodities, which have seriously affected the lives of the common people. The recent RBI Policy, hiking the Repo Rates, can impact the demand side only of the problem. The supply side is more important. Farmers must be given incentives to produce more of the items in short supply, both State and Central taxes, on the petro-products should be cut down and Distribution System also needs to be re-structured and insulated against corrupt practices so that rationed items can reach the targeted people without leakage and at affordable prices.
