Wholesale Prices for Primary Articles and Fuel, Power, light & Lubricants in India Base: 1993-94=100)

The WPI for the week ended 12th December, 2009 in respect of ‘Primary Articles’ and Commodities in the broad group ‘Fuel, Power, Light & Lubricants’ is given below:

PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%) The index for this major group declined by 0.3 percent to 284.7(Provisional) from 285.5 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 14.66 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 12/12/2009 (over 13/12/2008) as compared to 14.98 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 05/12/2009) and 11.75 percent during the corresponding week (ended13/12/2008) of the previous year.

The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for ' Food Articles ' group declined by 1.2 percent to 288.8 (Provisional) from 292.2 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of wheat (5%), bajra(4%), fruits & vegetables and barley (2 % each) and rice, condiments & spices, tea, masur and maize(1% each). However, the prices of moong (2%) and jowar (1 %) moved up

The index for ' Non-Food Articles ‘group rose by 2.4 percent to 250.7 (Provisional) from 244.8 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of tobacco (33 %), raw cotton (6%), raw rubber (4 %), fodder and copra (3 % each) and raw jute, groundnut seed and logs & timber (1 % each). However, the prices of raw silk (2 %) declined.

FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23%)

The index for this major group and annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis remained unchanged at their provisional level of 344.9 and 3.95% respectively. The rate of inflation was (-) 0.27 percent during the corresponding week (ended 13/12/2008) of the previous year
