Small laboratory extruder from KraussMaffei Berstorff for great challenges
(Munich, August 17, 2012) KraussMaffei Berstorff is offering customers with immediate effect the KMD 35-26/L, a parallel, counter-rotating twin-screw extruder for laboratory purposes. The KMD 35-26/L is the smallest extruder of this type on the market and can be used by raw material manufacturers and processors to reduce their material costs enormously.
Innovative concept for formulation development and quality control
Featuring a parallel 26 L/D processing unit, the twin-screw extruder generally has the same design as a standard production machine. "Our concept is extremely attractive, especially for raw material manufacturers, since a so-called process engineering scale-down can be simulated with extremely low material consumption", said Hans-Peter Schneider, Project Manager for development processing technology in twin-screw extruders at KraussMaffei Berstorff. The formulation is mixed in small quantities and optimized in subsequent test series before large material quantities are used in a production machine. The laboratory extruder can also naturally be utilized in production companies for quality control tasks. "Processors benefit from enormous cost savings when they test the formulation on a small scale, and can therefore offer customers a premium quality end product without producing large numbers of rejects", emphasized Peter Oswald, Head of the Profile and Sheet Extrusion Group at KraussMaffei Berstorff. This model is also a lucrative investment in ecological terms because valuable raw material is used sparingly.
Small, compact and robust for all current extrusion applications
The twin-screw extruder is equipped with a powerful gearbox which has a comparatively high torque in spite of a small axial distance. Just like production machines, the laboratory extruder is designed with internal screw tempering and barrel air cooling. Several transducers are mounted on the barrel for this purpose. With its small design, the compact machine is suitable for all commercially available hard and soft PVC mixtures. KraussMaffei Berstorff provides different screw geometries for pipe, profile and sheet extrusion. Output for profile production is 15-40 kg/h and 30-70 kg/h for pipe production. The extruder contains its own C5 control system with which trend graphs can be produced, correspondingly evaluated and archived. Material-specific shear energy values can also be calculated.
