Mining Safety Norms
                  Safety standards and norms for various mining activities separately for Coal, Non-Coal, Oil and Gas are prescribed in details under various provisions of the Coal Mines Regulations, 1957, Metalliferrous Mines Regulations, 1961 and Oil Mines Regulations, 1984 respectively. These Regulations are framed under the Mines Act, 1952.
                  The compliance of Safety norms are primarily the responsibility of the operator of the Mines defined under Section 18 of the Mines Act, 1952.  These are being checked by the Directorate General of Mines Safety through inspections and enquiries made by the Officers of the Directorate.  The compliance of the safety norms are being ascertained and ensured through the following actions:
·         Inspections of the mines and inquiries into the accidents and dangerous occurrences;
·         Issue of violation letters for contraventions observed during the course of Inspections and Inquiries;
·         Follow up inspections and reminders for non-compliance of violations;
·         Issue of Improvement Notices for cases of serious and repeated violations;
·         Issue of Prohibitory Orders in cases of urgent and immediate dangers to life and safety of the persons employed in mines or non-compliance of the improvement notices;
·         Prosecutions against the persons found responsible for violations in the Court of Law.
