SSI aims to expand output of UK slab plant: president

Sahaviriya Steel Industries aims to expand the slab capacity of its acquisition target Teesside Cast Products, in northern England, and is working with the UK government to this end, company president Win Viriyaprapaikit tells Steel Business Briefing.

“When we have stabilised production the next step will be to look at that (expanding capacity) because it is the wish of the Teesside people that we invest in the output, which will provide more jobs and more income for the community,” Win says.

He declined to be specific about the expansion plan, adding: “We are working with the UK government to see what the expansion options are, particularly in regards to CO2 emissions... We do not want to be penalised for any expansion, particularly as all the output will be exported to Asia."

SSI will ship TCP’s slab to its 4m tonnes/year hot strip mill in Thailand, while some might also go its affiliate, Sahaviriya Plate Mill, which has a capacity of around 1m t/y. TCP is currently owned by Tata Steel Europe and can produce 3.5m t/y of slab.

Win is confident the acquisition will be completed during this quarter, with the plant becoming operational six months later. He believes there are many good prospects for sourcing raw materials in the Atlantic basin. “We are open to look at these opportunities, to be more self-sufficient and also to have more stability in terms of raw materials.”

SSI remains upbeat about the Thai steel market, which surpassed 14mt in 2010, and should reach 15mt this year, Win forecasts.
