South Africa Voices Support for ASEAN to host 2030 World Cup

ASEAN Secretariat, 20 January 2011

South Africa pledges to render its full support for ASEAN to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup when ASEAN so decides. The assurance was made today during the presentation of the Letter of Credentials by the Ambassador of South Africa to ASEAN, H.E. Noel Noa Lehoko, to the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Surin Pitsuwan.

“I congratulate the Government and people of South Africa on the successful hosting of the 2010 World Cup,” said Dr Surin to Ambassador Lehoko. “This significant event has helped elevate the prestige of your country to a greater height in the eyes of the international community,” he added.

“Having successfully hosted the 2010 World Cup, one of the world’s greatest sports events, South Africa played its part in contributing to celebrating humanity,” replied Ambassador Lehoko. “It was hard work and our pride. It would be an honour for South Africa to share the experience and lessons learnt with ASEAN,” added the Ambassador.

Dr Surin and Ambassador Lehoko also exchanged views on ways and means to further enhance the existing relationship between ASEAN and South Africa bilaterally as well as through other frameworks and fora of which South Africa is a member, including the United Nations, G20, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), African Union, Non-Aligned Movement and South-South Cooperation.
