ASEAN Secretariat Hosts Post-Summit Briefing

ASEAN Secretariat, 4 November 2010

Following the conclusion of the 17th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Ha Noi last week, the ASEAN Secretariat today hosted a Post-Summit Briefing for members of the diplomatic community, representatives of international organisations, think-tanks and the media.

The briefing was delivered by Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN; Ambassador Vu Dang Dung, Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to ASEAN, as the current Chair of ASEAN; and Ambassador Ngurah Swajaya, Permanent Representative of Indonesia to ASEAN, as the incoming Chair of ASEAN.

Dr Surin, in encapsulating the progress made between the previous Summit in April and the recent one last month, said that the region has now become the “centrality of substance”, where opportunities and benefits lie not only for its people, but also for non-ASEAN Member States. He also reiterated the importance of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity, which was adopted by the ASEAN Leaders at the Summit, to the peoples of ASEAN.

Ambassador Vu then touched on the key achievements of the 17th ASEAN Summit. At the Summit, the ASEAN Leaders met with their counterparts from the Dialogue Partners countries, all of which reiterated their support to ASEAN and reaffirmed its centrality.

Ambassador Ngurah, meanwhile, briefed the audience on the venues for some of the key meetings to be held during Indonesia’s Chairmanship next year. Indonesia’s chairmanship logo and theme were also introduced.

Dr Surin also received several questions from the diplomatic members.
