SIPRI welcomes new Director

Tilman Brück is a development economist and an internationally renowned expert on the economics of peace, security and post-war reconstruction. He is currently Professor of Development Economics at Humboldt University of Berlin and Head of the Department of Development and Security at the German Institute for Economic Research.

Professor Brück has published widely on the role of conflict and insecurity as barriers to development. He has also been instrumental in focusing attention in academia and the policy community on the importance of studying the part played by individuals in war, peace and security.

‘We are extremely pleased to welcome Professor Brück to SIPRI and look forward to his energetic leadership, new ideas and global outlook’, said Göran Lennmarker, Chairman of SIPRI’s Governing Board. ‘The process of selecting a new Director was extremely competitive, and we are confident that Professor Brück possesses the ability, knowledge and experience to lead SIPRI towards its 50th anniversary and beyond.’

Reinforcing the link between economics, security and development

Professor Brück will further strengthen SIPRI’s commitment to providing authoritative independent data and evidence on key issues of global peace and security. As an economist, Professor Brück will widen SIPRI’s interdisciplinary approach, deepen its methodological foundations, and continue building SIPRI’s work at the critical nexus of security and development.

‘It is an honour to lead such a well-known and internationally respected institute. SIPRI is a dynamic institution which makes a unique and important contribution to a more peaceful world. I look forward to reaching out to our partners in Sweden and around the globe to further increase SIPRI’s positive impact worldwide’, said Professor Brück.
